Winter morning

Our life is dictated by the weather and today we celebrated a return to above zero temperatures. With a little, light snow falling, overcast skies and just a hint of the sun, we were able to go outside with faces exposed, only one pair of gloves and a mere three layers of clothing. A little work in the wood lot got our blood pumping and cheeks burning, but as usual the darkness came early and chased us back indoors and to the warmth of the wood stove.

Sun behind Round Mountain

The Sixth of January
David Budbill

The cat sits on the back of the sofa looking
out the window through the softly falling snow
at the last bit of gray light.

I can’t say the sun is going down.
We haven’t seen the sun for two months.
Who cares?

I am sitting in the blue chair listening to this stillness.
The only sound: the occasional gurgle of tea
coming out of the pot and into the cup.

How can this be?
Such calm, such peace, such solitude
in this world of woe.
