Alpenglow

Morning mountain

Alpenglow, it is a beautiful phenomenon that occurs just before or after the sun rises, when the sun is just below the horizon. The suns rays have no direct path for the light to reach the mountain. Instead, light reflects off airborne snow, water or ice particles low in the atmosphere. The effect is pink or orange light reflected on to the opposite horizon and can last anywhere from a few moments to hours. Because of our prolonged sunrises and sunsets we have ample opportunity to view this effect on clear days.

I do not know what peak in the Alaska Range this is, but it is days like today that make me what to grab my skis head for the mountains. I can only imagine what the view looks like from there…

  1. The ‘alpenglow’ on some mountains in the brooks range were intense enough to make me stop my truck and just… savor the moment.
