This weather is starting to get to me. It has been gray, foggy and warm (30s) for almost a week. Not fun outdoor weather. The snow is soft and heavy and has started to release off roofs and melt off the decks, exposing the wet wood beneath. On a good day we can see the end of the lake and round mountain; on a day like today, I can barely make out the spruces trees less than a half a mile away. Over the past fews days I have made ricotta, fresh yogurt, ravioli, 4 loaves of bread, chocolate pudding and cookies. The freezer is now overflowing with the spoils of my week indoors. I have also read a total of almost 500 pages of various books and crocheted a hat. I am ready for some outdoor time, sunshine and exercise. Tomorrow, I am going for a snowshoe no matter the icky, heavy snow conditions.
Crocheted Rib Hat
Adapted from: http://www.mielkesfarm.com/c_rib_ht.htm
This hat was simple and fast to crochet. I like the ribbing because it gives it texture and thickness. Now I will have to wait to get more yarn on the next plane before I can do another project. Maybe I should try something bigger so that it takes me longer. But there is something very satisfying about making hats and this one is no exception.
Materials: One and a half skeins of any worsted weight yarn. I used self striping 100% wool for warmth and color. H/ 5mm hook
Gauge: 5 sc = 1″
Abbreviations: Ch- chain, dc- double crochet, dec- decrease, fpst- front post stitch, rnd(s)- round(s),
sc- single crochet, sl st- slip stitch, yo- yarn over.
Ch 92 (for a large Mens size hat). Join, without twisting, to form a circle. Sc around for 14rnds. Turn inside-out, and crochet to the left again (which is the way you just came) sc in the front loops only. This is where you will fold the brim. Sc for 12 rnds. Join with a sl st. Ch 2.
Rnd 1: Dc around. Ch 2 counts as first Dc. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. Ch 2.
Rnd 2: Fpst around next dc, dc in next dc, fpst around next dc…and so on. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. Repeat this round for a total of 10-14 rnds depending on the size of your head.
Rnd 10: Ch 1. Fpst. Dec in next two sts as follows: Yo, go in next st, yo and pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops. Yo, go around next st as to fpst, yo, and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook, yo and draw through remaining loops on hook. Continue around in this manner.
Rnd 11: Fpst around in each st.
Rnd 12: Dec in this rnd and each rnd here after, till only 6-8 sts rem (dec by crocheting 2 tog with fpst).
Cut yarn, pull through sts to close, darn in ends.
I made a pom-pom for the top: http://www.yodelmagazine.com/how-to-make-a-pom-pom.html
