The professionals took to the snow today. It was an overcast, snowy day here on Puntilla Lake, but that did not stop the irondoggers and their plane support from the race.
They start in Big Lake and head north to Skwentna, Shell Lake and then to us here at Puntilla Lake. The first team made it here around 2:30 PM.
Most racers stopped only long enough to gas up, add a little oil, guzzle some water and maybe a cliff bar.
Volunteers checked them into the checkpoint and pumped their gas.
And then they speed away, headed north. Most will make it to McGrath tonight, 350 miles from the start. They will get to Nome in two days and then head back to Fairbanks and the finish line.
