A Maine Island

Being here, on the Maine coast in the fall is such a treat. Most of the tourists are gone, the cool breezes off the ocean mingle nicely with the warm afternoon sun and the vibrant colors of fall are just beginning to show themselves. Each afternoon I run along the coast of this island listening to the hum of insects in the tall grasses lining the road, and drink in the heavy, salty air. It is just incredibly pleasant. After a summer which felt more like a winter and a long cold winter before that, shorts, t-shirts and ocean breezes are exactly what I have been dreaming about.

This week we celebrated the end of summer with an all island party full of lobsters, home smoked brisket and live music. Bare feet danced in the grass to the notes of wagon wheel, beers were shared and fireworks capped the night.

I miss Alaska already, but I love my Maine home.
